Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is simply a wonderful movie. The set
design is perfect and so is the cast. Gene Wilder is perfect as Wonka and unlike
the Johnny Depp film this Wonka makes sense. I could go on all day extolling
the virtues of this movie but instead I'll get straight to the plot.
At the start all the school kids come running out of school and they are all headed
to the candy shop. When they get there the candy man sings "Because the Candy
Man Can" and gives away free candy ! Then we see the hero of the story
poor Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum) peering in through the window. Charlie then does his
paper round and when he comes home he gives the family a loaf a bread which
they believe is a banquet !. Charlie's family consists of his put upon mother and
four lazy bed-ridden grandparents who haven't been out of bed in 20 years.
The family then learn that the reculsive chocolate magnate Willy Wonka is
having a competition where there are five golden tickets hidden in Wonka Bars.
Anyone who finds a ticket will get a tour of the factory and a lifetime supply
of chocolate. Charlie lights up and hopes he can find a ticket.
The first ticket winner is a German boy named Augustus Gloop (Michael Bollner).
All Augustus does all day is eat. The second ticket winner is a spoilt girl called Veruca Salt
(Julie Dawn Cole)
and all she does is moan and whinge about everything.
The third ticket winner is a girl called Violet Beauregarde (Denise Nickerson) and all
she does all day is chew gum. The fourth
ticket winner is a boy named Mike TeeVee (Paris Themmen).
All Mike does all day is watch t.v hence
the name. The fifth ticket winner is from South America but wait it turns out that was a fraud
and so the next ticket winner is ? You guessed it. Charlie ! Charlie decides to take his
uncle Joe (Jack Albertson) with him on the big day of the factory tour. All the ticket winners also received a
visit from rival chocolate maker Slugworth who tells them that if they can bring back an
everlasting gobstopper he will give them a fortune in cash.
The big day arrives and all the ticket winners wait outside the factory for the
world famous Willy Wonka to arrive. Finally he does and they are all off
into the factory. The first thing Wonka does is get them all to sign a waver
relinquishing him from any responsibility should anything happen. Veruca's
father tells Veruca not to sign and she retorts with "He's always making things
difficult !".
Then they all get crammed into a strange elevator and down a strange hall
which keeps getting smaller. They come to a door and after Wonka opens
a musical lock it is into the Chocolate Room. The chocolate room is a world
that is literally made of chocolate and candy.
There is also a wonderous chocolate
waterfall and chocolate river. Willy Wonka sings the song Pure Imagination
and then all the gang start to explore and eat the chocolate and candy in the
chocolate room. The gang then meet the Oompa Loompa's who are strange small
orange men who Wonka says are from Loompa Land. Augustus Gloop starts to
drink from the chocolate river and Wonka tells him to stop but he falls in. He then
gets sucked up a pipe and gets stuck. Wonka says "the pressure will get him out" and
eventually it does as Augustus gets pushed out like a bullet in a gun. After Augustus
gets zonked to the fudge room the Oompa Loompa's sing a song about the perils of
eating too much. An Oompa Loompa then takes Mrs Gloop to save Augustus from
the fudge room boiler.
The rest of the gang then board the Wonkatania, which is a beautiful paddle
boat. They go through a tunnel and have a terrible nightmare before arriving at
Wonka's secret laboratory. Wonka shows them around and gives all the kids
an ever lasting gobstopper. Wonka shows them a magic gum machine but
warns
Violet not to eat the gum because he hasn't got it quite right yet.
She ignores Wonka's advice and eats the gum anyway. The gum tastes like a three
course meal but when she gets to the blueberry pie she starts to turn into
a blueberry. Before she can explode she is rolled out to be squeezed by
the Oompa Loompa's who sing a song about the dangers of chewing like a cow.
The remaining children and their parents then go on to lickable wallpaper
and have a look at where fizzy lifting drink is made. Charlie and Grandpa
Joe decide to take a swig of fizzy lifting drink after everyone else has
left the room. They float into the air and have a great time until they realize
they have gone too high and they are nearly chopped to bits by the ceiling fan.
They realize that they have to burp to get down and that they do.
The gang then come to a room filled with golden geese who lay gold eggs for
Easter. Veruca starts screaming that she wants a golden goose but Wonka
tells her no. She starts screaming and has a musical tantrum but then falls
down the garbage shute and so does Mr Salt. The Oompa Loompa's sing
a song about spoilt children.
The next stop is a trip in the Wonkamobile which is powered by fizzy
drink. As the machine powers up the remaing children Charlie and Mike TeeVee
are flooded with bubbles as the machine powers forward. But they all get
cleaned up by the magic of the hsawaknow (that's Wonkawash backwards).
Then it is into the T.V room where Wonka claims he can transmit a chocolate
bar by television. He promptly does so and Mike TeeVee gets so excited that he
wants to be transmitted by television. Wonka tells him no but he doesn't listen
and he ends up an inch tall. The Oompa Loompa's sing a song about watching
too much T.V and that is the end of the tour.
Wonka then tells Charlie and Grandpa Joe that the tour is over and goodbye.
They ask each other "what did we do wrong ?" Grandpa Joe goes on to confront Wonka
who tells them they stole fizzy lifting drink so that they get nothing. Charlie
is heart broken and gives Wonka back the gobstopper. Wonka then tells
Charlie he has won the jackpot ! Wonka tells Charlie that Slugworth works
for him. Then all get into the Wonkavator and they smash through the ceiling and
into the sky. Wonka tells Charlie he sent out the golden tickets so he could find
a special person to take over his factory and that he is giving the factory to Charlie
and that the family can all move in. And they all lived happily ever after.
All in all a fantastic magical fantasy. The new Willy Wonka movie
is rubbish compared to this movie. There is no point in remaking movies
when the original is already perfect.
