Pet Sematary is a truly terrifying and creepy movie. Unlike so many horror movies Pet Sematary is not simply stupid garbage. Pet Sematary is a highly sophisticated and even a philosophical film which explores the mysteries of life and death and man's place in the universe.

The movie begins with a young family who move to rural Maine from Chicago. The family consists of Doctor Louis Creed (Dale Midkiff), Rachael Creed (Denise Crosby), Elle (Blaze Berdahl), Cage (Miko Hughes) and their cat Church. The country setting is peaceful and idyllic but away from the house lies the Pet Sematary. The Pet Sematary is a place that broken hearted children have built, a graveyard for long dead pets. Most of the pets have been killed in the road and what happens in the road will lead to an incredible horror for the Creeds.

The Creeds meet kindly neighbour Jud Crandall (Fred Gwynne) when he saves Cage from getting run over by a truck. Jud welcomes the young family to their new home but when Rachael asks "Mr Crandall there's a path over there, do you know where it goes ?" Jud goes a bit strange and tells them "I'll take you up there sometime, tell you the story as well, but after you get settled in".

Later Jud takes the family to the Pet Sematary but there is a strange deadfall beyond the Pet Sematary and an even stranger place beyond it. On the first day Louis starts working at the local college there is an accident and a young man named Victor Pascow (Brad Greenquist) is admitted among screaming students. Victor has been hit by a truck. Louis tries to save him but before he dies Victor tells Louis "I will come to you".

In the night Louis has a dream where Pascow comes to him and takes him for a walk into the forest and into the Pet Sematary. Victor tells him that "This is the place where the dead speak" and "No matter how much you may feel you have to, do not go on to the place where the dead walk. The ground beyond is sour."

Louis awakens from his dream shaken but continues on with his life. Soon the rest of his family go on a vacation to Chicago and Louis is left alone. He then receives a call from Jud that he must come over. He finds that Church has been run over in the road. Louis say he will have to bury the cat and that Elle will be heart-broken. Jud however tells him that there is a better way.

Jud leads Louis into the Pet Sematary, over the deadfall and after an endless walk into an ancient indian burial ground. Louis is told to bury the cat in the ground. Night has now fallen and the two trek back to their homes. Later on Louis is scared to death when Church jumps out at him. The cat has come back from the dead. Louis is rattled and asks Jud if anyone has ever buried a person up there. Jud says "Christ on his throne no and who ever would."

Elle notices that there is something different about Church and after a conversation with Louis Rachael tells Louis about her sister Zelda who died of spina bifida. The Creeds have a picnic and their worst horror comes true when Cage runs into the road and is hit by a truck. Louis is besides himself with grief and starts thinking about putting Cage up in the Pet Sematary. Jud tells him that has already been done but the problem is the person comes back evil.

When Rachael and Elle go to Chicago, Louis digs Cage up and buries him in the Pet Sematary. Elle receives a warning from Pascow that Louis is going to do something terrrible and so Rachael flies back to Maine to find out what is going on. In the meantime Louis goes to sleep and Cage comes back from the dead. Cage kills Jud and when Rachael arrives back she sees Zelda again and is then killed by Cage.

Louis wakes up and finds something is terribly wrong. He finds both Jud and Rachael are dead. He decides he must kill his son and after a struggle he injects him with an overdose. Louis has gone insane with the horror of what has happened and buries Rachael in the Pet Sematary. Later she comes back from the dead and kills him.

This is one of the most horrifying movies ever created. Horror movies are very hard to do well but this movie is just about perfect asides from one massive error. How on earth could there be a secret burial ground in America that nobody knows about that can bring people back from the dead ! Oh well asides from that this movie is brilliant. Also be sure to look for the cameo Stephen King made as a Minister.
