I Heart Huckabees is an astounding piece of work. David O. Russell has single handedly invented the genre of the "Existential Comedy". The film starts with Albert Markovski (Jason Schwartzman) reading a poem about a rock. Albert is an environmental crusader but things are not going well for him because he is at risk of being kicked out of his own environmental coalition by Huckabees corporate climber Brad Stand (Jude Law).

Albert encounters a number of strange coincidences with one involving an African guy so he decides to seek help from the existential detectives who happen to be Bernard (Dustin Hoffman) and Vivian (Lily Tomlin). The two detectives decide to take on Albert's case and they put him into a magic black body bag where he starts to confront his reality.

The two detectives decide to team Albert up with firefighter Tommy (Mark Wahlberg) and strangely enough the two get on well together and Tommy becomes Albert's ally in the fight against the scheming Brad. Tommy however has discovered the writings of a French woman named Caterine (Isabella Huppert) who believes life is pointless, painful and meaningless. Tommy begins to reject the existential detectives and starts to follow her writings.

Vivian goes to Huckabees and has an encounter with Brad. Brad has a habit of telling everyone a story about him and Shania Twain where he got her to eat chicken salad sandwiches which she apparently hates. Brad decides to utilize the services of the existential detectives in a sneaky move to oust Albert from the coalition. Albert and Walberg meet up with Brad and Tommy knocks him over.

Meanwhile Brad has decided to move Albert's coalition meetings to Huckabees corporate. He has also enlisted Shania Twain in a campaign to save the open spaces. Chaos ensues as bickering and in-fighting erupts which is typical in such groups. Tommy gets so angry with Brad that he knocks him over again which is hilarious. Albert and Tommy leave and they then hook up with Caterine.

Albert, Tommy and Caterine pay a visit to Albert's parents where the mother tells her she's a bitch. The trio have philosophical explorations about the meaningless of life and end up dunking their faces in the mud and hitting each other in the face with a big rubber ball. Albert eventually has sex with Caterine but this ends up upsetting Tommy.

Brad's girlfriend Dawn (Naomi Watts) starts to get interested in the work of the detectives but instead of getting enlighted she goes a bit loco instead. Her transformation horrifies Brad who gets worried about his future at Huckabees. Brad's existential case culminates when the detectives confront him about telling the Shania tuna salad story all the time and why is he ashamed of his "sad" brother. Brad has a bit of a break down and starts to lose his zing.

Dawn nearly gets killed in a fire but Tommy rescues her. Later there is a final confrontation between Brad, Albert, the detectives and Caterine. Albert concludes that Caterine is too dark and the existential detectives are not dark enough.

Brad and Albert end up fighting in an elevator but in the end Brad loses his girlfriend to Tommy and ends up losing control of the coalition. There is a funny scene where Shania herself makes an appearance and she attacks Brad and tells him I eat tofu tuna. Albert regains control of the coalition and right at the end him and Tommy hit each other in the face with the rubber ball.

In conclusion this is a great intellectual movie but it is NOT going to appeal to everyone. Some people will absolutely hate it. I however think it is pretty neat. There is some really funny stuff in this movie especially the confrontation at the end with the detectives and Brad. This movie is so clever I am amazed it got made at all in the current studio system.
