Joel is looking forward to a trip to New York but he is unable to take the trip because the town of Cicely can not find an alternative doctor. Joel goes on strike and the town of Cicely appoints Mike Monroe as its representative to take legal action against him. Joel is told that if he will not provide the town of Cicely with medical service the town of Cicely will not provide him with lodgings. Joel is forced out into the cold and lives in a tent until he eventually decides to swim with the tide and not against it.

There is a homeless man hanging around in Cicely who Maurice takes a dislike to. Maurice soon finds out that the man is named Lance Bristol and that he is an ex-marine who saw some lights in the sky and has checked out of normal life.

Chris develops an experimental art project involving as many lights as he can find.

Holling hibernates.
