Ed answers an ad in Filmmakers magazine to film a vanishing breed. In exchange for
his film Ed will receive a filmaker's credit and fifty dollars. When Ed meets Ira Wingfeather
an Indian who makes tradional hand crafted flutes he knows he has found his subject. Ed
becomes distressed at the idea that such a beautiful art will die when Wingfeather dies
because there is no one left to carry on the art, so he asks Wingfeather if he can
learn to make them.
Joel tries to prove to Ed that Jews are not a dying breed. The problem is that when
Joel tries to search for fellow Jews in the Alaskan telephone book he finds that Ed is in
fact right. Joel becomes depressed, troubled and starts to feel culturally isolated.
Holling learns that his uncle Charlie has died. Holling starts to think that life has passed
him by and so he hides in a cabin in the woods with some home made vodka. Holling is
then joined in the cabin with Chris and eventually Joel who both agonize about life with
him. Shelly meanwhile is worried about her Holling but she gets him back on track with
her own puppet show.
