When Joel sees Maggie driving into Cicely with a dead large deer Joel is disgusted. Joel argues with Holling and Chris who believe that being a hunter is man's natural place in the food chain. Joel comes to the conclusion that before he can make a final scientific conclusion about hunting he should experience it first hand. Joel goes into the woods with Chris and Holling and shoots a bird. Joel then desperately attempts to unshoot the bird in his operating room. Joel actually ends up enjoying the hunting experience but he concludes in the end that it was the dying he couldn't stand.

Meanwhile Ed is worried that Ruth-Anne is getting old and frail so he starts to treat her like an old woman. He throws a belated seventy-fifth birthday party for her and he gives her a gift that is fitting for one of her age - a grave. Ruth-Anne is at first taken aback by the gift but both her and Ed end up dancing on the grave after Ruth-Anne suggests it is the opportunity of a lifetime.
